In the mood for some live theatre close to home?
For the first time in Plays In Cafes history, Vaughan is being featured as the kick-off location for a post Valentine’s Day entertainment event held this weekend.
Three 15-minute plays will be presented as staged play readings at three different cafes in the Vaughan area. The plays, written by local playwrights, are romantic comedies and will be featured on the following dates and locations:
- Friday Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. - Coffee Culture Cafe, located at 10037 Keele St. in Vaughan
- Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m. - Java Joes Cafe, located at 298 John St. in Thornhill
- Sunday, March 2 at 3 p.m. - 9 Baci Cafe located at 10200 Keele St. in Vaughan.
Talk by North York playwright Tasha Gordon-Solomon, deals with the all important question - to break up or not to break up, the semantics of which are up for a heated debate.
Deal by Vaughan playwright Alex Karolyi tells the story of a woman who tries her best to keep the romance alive in her long-term relationship with a couch loving, beer guzzling man.
In the play Close Quarter by Toronto playwright Chantal Forde, what starts as an intense discussion over blueberry waffles ends with two people redefining their ambiguous relationship.
Guest musician Jamie Miller will be providing great music in between the plays.
The three-night event is made possible thanks to a generous contribution from Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua’s annual gala and charity golf tournament.
“In December 2013, Shadowpath had the fortunate pleasure to discover that they had been selected as one of the recipients of the funds raised,” said Alex Karolyi, founder of Shadowpath Theatre productions, a not-for-profit theatre arts production company. “Immediately preparations began to seek out Vaughan cafes, valentine plays, and select three winter days. New venues were found, plays were written and performers were confirmed. Coffee Culture and 9 Baci Cafe joined forces to open and close the event while a regular Plays In Cafes favorite - Java Joes, came on board for the Saturday show.”
Because space is limited in the cafe settings, organizers are offering a VIP reserved table option at $15/person which gets you a table with a great view of the performances, plus VIP tables will each receive one of the scripts featured at the event, signed by the playwright. All VIP’s are also automatically entered into a draw to win two tickets to Shadowpath’s next event, Readings In Wineries (April 13 at The Willow Spring Winery).
Alternatively, patrons can show up the day of and find a spot on a first-come-first-serve basis and Pay-What-You-Can at the door.
Tickets for a VIP Table are $15 each. To purchase tickets, visit the ‘Box Office page’ at www.shadowpaththeatre.ca or pay-what-you-can at the door.
