Metrolinx and GO Transit officials announced this morning that the new Gormley GO station is under construction.

To better meet the demand for increased service in York Region — and the Richmond Hill line that serves 10,000 riders every weekday — GO Transit is building a new station at Stouffville Road, north of the existing Richmond Hill GO station.

The new station will add more than 800 parking spaces and will also include heated shelters, a bus loop and a dedicated kiss and ride area.

To accommodate this expansion, a new layover facility is already in operation near Leslie Street and Bethesda Sideroad to service and store trains. This will allow trains to park overnight closer to the start of their morning trips.

Construction of the Gormley station is underway, extending the Richmond Hill line north to Stouffville Road and Leslie Street. The station is expected to open by the end of 2016 and is expected to create more than 20 jobs during construction.

“This is great news for commuters in Oak Ridges-Markham. This new GO station will make a difference in their day and provide a smoother commute for York Region transit riders,” said Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena Jaczek.

Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi said today’s announcement will make transit “more accessible, convenient and easier to use for the citizens of Richmond Hill”.
