It was also the first day for the Mayor and Council in Vaughan. Tonight was the new Council’s inaugural meeting.

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua spoke to 680 News tonight about what’s ahead.

You know our area is growing exponentially here in the Greater Toronto area and of course we’re generating jobs for people, building homes and with that comes the challenge of transit and traffic and we’re working with our partners at the regional and provincial level to bring about positive change in that area. As you know we have a subway coming here to the City of Vaughan very shortly and the extension of the 427 and that will help alleviate some of the traffic and congestion, not to mention the building of rapidways that provide accessible and affordable service for the residents of Vaughan.

Bevilacqua received nearly 80 per cent of the vote for Mayor.
