It was a more lavish inauguration than the last one in 2010, but it actually cost about half as much.

Roughly 550 people attended the Dec. 2 inauguration at EastRidge Evangelical Missionary Church, during which Mayor Justin Altmann and six councillors were sworn-in, four of whom were brand new. Approximately 200 people attended the after-party at the Royal Canadian Legion.

The total cost, so far, is $1,669, according to Marc Pourvahidi, the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville’s director of finance and treasurer.

In 2010, the inauguration was held in council chambers and had between 70 and 80 invited guests. It cost $3,500, according to Pourvahidi.

The legion donated its building and bartenders for the post-inauguration celebration earlier this month and the town crier contributed his time for free. Food was provided free of charge by local restaurants.

New expenses for the 2014 inauguration included a photographer ($250). One was not needed in 2010 as all members of council returned for another term. The church rental was $415 and there was gavel engraving ($62) and pens Altmann gave his councillors ($240).
