Instead of giving each other silly secret Santa gifts, the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library’s staff takes that money and donates it to a local elementary school’s library.
This year’s recipient was Ballantrae Public School.
Schools are chosen by drawing a name out of a hat, according to Carolyn Nordheimer James, the library’s CEO.
“It’s like kindred spirits, one library to another,” she said.
The donations started in 2006 and have ranged between $250 and $500.
Library staff who have won a service award from the town have donated that money - $250 – to the school library Christmas fund, according to Nordheimer James.
“Every little bit helps,” she said.
