Veterans Affairs Minister and Vaughan MPP Julian Fantino has launched a Twitter campaign in the lead up to Remembrance Day inviting people to share their memories of Canadian veterans.
The campaign, which uses the hashtag #whowillyouremember and has an accompanying video, launched Nov. 4.
Since then it’s gone viral with many people tweeting deeply touching, uplifting and, at times, heart-wrenching stories, Fantino said in a phone interview from Ottawa Wednesday.
“We wanted to raise the level of thought and get input from Canadians about their own experience of someone they remember that may have been a serving member; maybe a time during a war when they had some connection with a soldier or other situation or other military person today,” he said.
“With the recent two (killings) of warrant officer (Patrice) Vincent, south of Montreal, and Cpl. (Nathan) Cirillo situation, here in Ottawa, and the outpouring at the funerals, both of which I attended, it sort of brought it home to me that Canadians are a very caring, conscientious people. And we wanted to make sure we kept the memory and the focus and attention on this very special time of the year - especially in light of what happened just two weeks ago today.”
