Winners of Ontario Masonry Design Awards announced

Six Toronto-area buildings have been recognized as standing among the best new masonry buildings in Ontario. The buildings were recently honoured at the Ontario Masonry Design Awards gala at the Allstream Centre, recognizing the work of Ontario’s masonry professionals and highlighting the substantial, imaginative and creative use of masonry design.

Ireland Park in Toronto won the provincial award for Artistic/Commemorative Design. The city-owned project was designed by Kearns Mancini Architects, engineered by Picco Engineering and features masonry by Trinity Custom Masonry, with Kilkenny Limestone Company as a supplier.

The Village by High Park won the Architectural Design award for Residential High-Rises. Designed by Burka Architects Inc. with Sigmund Soudack and Assoc. Ltd. As engineers, the building features masonry by the Gottardo Group of Companies, with Brampton Brick Ltd. as suppliers.

The R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant won the award for Restoration Design. Featuring masonry by Clifford Restoration Ltd., restoration of the city building was designed by Taylor Hazell Architects. Paisley Brick and Tile served as a supplier.

The historic façades of the Bay Adelaide Centre won the award for Revitalization Design. Owned by Brookfield Properties and designed by Goldsmith Borgal Architects, the facades sport masonry by Clifford Restoration Ltd. Traditional Cut Stone and Mason’s Masonry served as suppliers.

Bridgepoint Health’s Administration Building took home the award for Structural Design for Institutional College, Universities, Hospitals and Government. The building features masonry by Clifford Restoration Ltd., with Halsall Associates as engineers, Stantec Architecture and KPMB Architects behind the design and Vintage Brick Limited contributing as a supplier.

The Kleinburg Residence in Vaughan won the Architectural Design award for Residential Low-Rise: Single-Family Home. Designed by Steven Hunt Design, the home uses masonry by the Medi Group.

The awards cover projects completed between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2013.

“Masonry has a long history and a bright future in Ontario,” says Judy Pryma, president of MasonryWorx, the provincial association representing professionals in brick, block and stone. “It allows us to build beautiful, sustainable and innovative architecture that stands the test of time. Masonry buildings are some of the most iconic buildings in their communities, and they contribute an enduring sense of place and identity.”

Pryma says, “It’s gratifying to see so many MasonryWorx members contributing to winning entries.” MasonryWorx member Brampton Brick Ltd. contributed to the Village by High Park, and Mason’s Masonry contributed to the Bay Adelaide Centre.

The Ontario Masonry Design Awards, a two-tiered program with 11 regional awards categories and 15 at the provincial level, is the only one of its kind in Ontario. The program is known for recognizing and honouring the creative and substantial use of masonry materials in design and construction.
