Oak Ridges Soccer Club president Tony Barbieri has been elected president of the York Region Soccer Association.

Barbieri defeated incumbent Lucille Abate, the former president of the Newmarket Soccer Club, during the YRSA annual general meeting and elections Saturday.

Barbieri has been vice-president and treasurer for the YRSA the past two years.

In other YRSA news, Benny Steenhorst is one of three individuals to be inducted into the organization’s hall of fame.

The Aurora resident will join Eira Keay, a long-time volunteer in Markham and Unionville-Milliken soccer programs, and former president Tony Casole as inductees during a dinner Nov. 28 in Woodbridge.

Steenhorst, vice-president of the York Region Soccer League and administrator of the Newmarket & District Soccer League, is a founding member of the Aurora Youth Soccer Club and YRSA.

He was inducted into the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame earlier this month.
