It seems those seeking to win a spot on city council were a bit better behaved on the campaign trail this time around - at least when it comes to election signs.

City bylaw enforcement staff pulled down 3,885 illegally placed signs as of early today. That’s far fewer -11,600 fewer to be exact - than in 2010 when 15,497 were yanked out.

City officials are crediting the “proactive approach” taken to educating candidates about election sign rules, including holding information sessions at each candidate’s campaign office.

The city also worked with York Region to provide a more co-ordinated approach to removing illegal signs, according to staff.

Of course, the fact there are 13 fewer candidates - 32 this time compared to 45 in 2010 - could have been a factor, too.
