Municipal elections Monday: Home Stretch

Oct. 22, 2014

On Monday electors across Ontario will head to the polls to vote for their municipal leaders. At least five municipalities in the GTHA will have a new mayor after the election.

Among the five mayors stepping down this year is long-time Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion, who is presently the longest serving mayor in Ontario. Caledon mayor Marolyn Morrison, Hamilton mayor Bob Bratina, Whitchurch- Stouffville mayor Wayne Emmerson and Whitby mayor Pat Perkins are also not seeking re-election.

While McCallion and Morrison are leaving politics, Bratina, Emmerson and Perkins are all interested in positions at a diff erent level of government. Bratina is seeking the federal Liberal nomination in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek, Emmerson is interested in the York Region chair position and Perkins is running for the federal Conservatives in a byelection in Whitby-Oshawa next month.

For the first time the electorate in Halton and Durham regions will vote directly for a regional chair on Monday, with both Halton chair Gary Carr and Durham chair Roger Anderson standing for election. York and Peel regional councils will both be appointing a new chair at their first meeting as York chair Bill Fisch and Peel chair Emil Kolb are stepping down.

King mayor Steve Pellegrini is the only mayor in the GTHA who will not be awaiting election results Monday night as he was acclaimed in September.

If Milton mayor Gord Krantz is re-elected he is poised to replace McCallion as the longest serving mayor. McCallion was first elected as mayor in 1978 and Krantz two years later in 1980.
