Vintage Vistas at Vaughan City Hall

Snapd Vaughan East and Snapd Woodbridge
October 2014

Salvatore Gallo and Giuseppe Pivetta, two accomplished Toronto-based artists of proud Italian descent have been chronicling nostalgic vistas of disappearing rural landscapes and urban street scenes for decades. Best recognized for painting “en plein air” (in the open air), both artists have spent countless hours in all seasons depicting rustic settings located in Vaughan and York Region, many now developed for residential and commercial use.

The densely populated streetscapes of everyday life in downtown Toronto and bordering industrial areas have also inspired sentimental documentaries by Gallo and Pivetta, who have encapsulated in paint, a series of iconic neighborhoods. These vanishing local vistas will remain timeless always in the archival footage captured so authentically by two such competent artists.

Vintage Vistas was organized by the City of Vaughan in partnership with the National Congress of Italian Canadians (NCIC).

Since 1974, the NCIC has represented Canadians of Italian heritage in economic, social and political issues affecting the quality of life for all Canadians.
