A new report by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance shows that sport tourism is increasing in Canada. According to the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada, visitor spending associated with sport tourism reached $5.2-billion in 2012, reflecting an increase of 5.3 per cent since 2011.
Domestic sport tourists continue to account for the majority of expenditures at 84 per cent of the sports tourism market. Overseas markets account for 10.8 per cent and U.S. visitors account for 5.3 per cent of sport tourism revenues. To a large degree, the increase in sport tourism revenues reflects an increase in the number of overnight trips taken by Canadian travellers.
