Ecology Ottawa is leading the charge on a new initiative to plant one million trees across the city in time for Canada's 150th anniversary.

From oaks, to maples and ironwoods, a number of community partners, schools and the city will be planting 30 types of trees indigenous to Canada.

Chris Henderson, one of the champions behind Tree Ottawa, said they want to make up for the destruction caused by the Emerald Ash Borer - which has seen 15,000 ash trees cut down in the last six years.

"We're going to lose a lot of trees, in fact, with the Emerald Ash Borer 40-million trees in the Greater Ottawa area are going to die," he said. We need to replace them with natural, indigenous species so we keep our greener capital."

The goal is to plant one tree for every person in the city as a birthday present to the country.
