If you’re a fan of mammoth pumpkins and great big veggies, you’ll want to head on over to the Woodbridge Fall Fair this weekend.

With $8,000 in prize money, competition is expected to be fierce at this year’s giant pumpkin contest, taking place at the Woodbridge fairgrounds - off Kipling, north of Hwy. 7 - from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

There’s also giant vegetable, flower, photography, food, antiques and arts and crafts competitions.

If that doesn’t get your tractor revving, there’s plenty more down-on-the-farm-type fun to be had including a straw bale maze, poultry exhibit, precision horse riding show and a cow milking contest.

There’s loads of other entertainment as well including live music, jugglers, clowns, midway rides, an extreme motorcycle show, a snake exhibit and monster truck rides, too.

“It’s a great way to experience a rural, fall day celebrating the harvest with your family,” said Jamie Maynard, spokesperson for the Woodbridge Agricultural Society. “We’re in an urban area, but you can kind of step back in history a bit and experience what an old-fashioned fair is all about and it’s a great activity for the day for a family.”

The festivities get under way Saturday and run through Monday, with gates opening at 10 a.m. daily.

Last year, more than 10,000 people passed through the gates over the course of the three days, Maynard said.

Admission costs $8 for adults and $2 for students while children five and under get in for free.

That money goes to support the ongoing operation of the fair as well as the Woodbridge Agricultural Society’s mandate to promote agriculture and conservation initiatives in the city including the Woodbridge Village Farmers Market, Maynard said.
