If you lost food during the Dec. 22 ice storm and are on a fixed income, help is on the way.

Eligible York Region residents can receive help from the province with a grocery card starting today.

In order to be eligible, you had to have been without power for more than 48 hours and face financial difficulty.

A limited number of cards are available and will be distributed in the mail and will not be available in person.

The province is offering the one-time-only cards as a way for financially struggling people to replace food that spoiled in power outages during the ice storm that hit the GTA Dec. 22.

Officials believe more than 7,000 homes in York Region suffered power outages of more than 48 hours.

If your family is eligible, you will receive a $100 grocery card. If you are single, the card is worth $50.

The region anticipates high demand for the cards and ask you be patient during the distribution process.
