There will be a meeting to discuss sponsorship of refugee families on Friday, Sept. 11, from 7-10 p.m. at the King Township Public Library in King City.
The meeting will look into the details for “the formation of a group or groups of individuals who would like to sponsor a refugee family.”
Representatives of six area church congregations have met twice since June to check into details for sponsorship.
An agency called AURA (Anglican United Refugee Alliance) acts as the sponsorship holder and works with Immigration and Citizenship Canada and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help co-ordinate and facilitate private sponsorship groups.
It will cost a significant amount of money to sponsor families to come to Canada. Each of the area congregations has been asked to sign a letter of commitment with AURA to pledge money so that the sponsored family has resources to establish themselves in Canada. York Pines Church has pledged $10,000.
The local group has been told the identified Syrian refugee family living in refugee camp in Lebanon should arrive in Canada in February 2016 and consists of four adults and one child.

King Township Public Library is located at 1970 King Rd., King City.
