A stretch of King-Vaughan Road, shuttered in early August due to safety concerns, is expected to remain closed until the end of this year.
Vaughan councillors, at Tuesday’s finance committee meeting, approved spending a little more than $525,000 to install a temporary pre-manufactured bridge on top of the existing single-lane bridge structure spanning the Humber River, deemed unsafe due to issues with its guide rail system.
The stretch of road between Hwy. 27 and Kipling Avenue was closed Aug. 6 after a routine inspection revealed the guide rail on the bridge’s south side has deteriorated and poses a safety risk to the 650 vehicles that traverse it daily.
The temporary bridge is expected to be installed, and the road re-opened, by the end of 2015, according to a city staff report.
The original concrete bridge, built in 1920, is slated to be replaced in 2019.
