More than 5,000 education workers in York Region are refusing to carry out some duties as of today as part of a decision by their union to increase their work-to-rule campaign across the province.

A notice on the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 2331, which represents education workers in York’s Catholic school board and the York public school board, lays out a number of instructions for its members as part of the beefed-up labour actions.

For example, educational assistants are not to participate in an fundraising activities such as pizza or book orders, early childhood educators are not to do any photocopying or paperwork of any kind, secretarial staff are not to create or print newsletters and library technicians are not to prepare or supervise book fairs outside of school hours or do paperwork of any kind,

The province’s 55,000 education workers have been without a contract for more than a year.

This is phase two of the work-to-rule campaign.

The first phase began Sept. 9 after talks with the province broke off.
