The Thornhill Golf and Country Club is not only tailored for those who enjoy being out on their fairways.

The facility, which was established as a golf club in 1922 and launched a curling rink in 1963, is now trying to create an awareness on the importance of being physically fit.

In doing so, the club officially launched a 3,000-squre-foot state-of-the-art fitness facility, Saturday.

Peter Armstrong, Thornhill Golf and Country Club marketing and communications manager, said the new facility located on their property includes a weight room, stretching area, new locker rooms for men and women along with a sauna and treatment room.

There are also two fitness instructors on-site.

By the start of the new year, two more fitness instructors are expected to be added to the staff.

In creating the fitness centre, which will provide 75 hours of training per week, Armstrong was quick to point out it is not just for those who hold club memberships for golf or curling.

The club will open its doors and offer separate memberships at $399 for a 12-week period to join their fitness centre.

“It’s for people just looking to join a better gym and where there’s no lineups," Armstrong said.

“It could be for a hockey player looking for specific things they can do to improve their fitness by working with one of our trainers.

“What we offer is a boutique style of fitness centre.”

The fitness facility is just part of a $5-million renovation project approved by members that will also include the creation of a 35-foot by 75-foot outdoor pool and the conversion of their existing outdoor tennis court facility to clay from hard court.

In creating the pool, which is to be located near the tennis area, Armstrong noted one of the existing courts will be removed.

Currently awaiting approval for this segment of expansion from the City of Vaughan, Armstrong said if all goes according to schedule, they hope have the pool and renovated tennis courts ready for use by next summer.

“Not only is this great for our membership, but it’s great for those wishing to join our fitness centre,” he said.
