Two public golf courses in York Region were placed in a select group recently.

In its annual rating of the top 59 best and best-valued public golf courses in Canada, Eagles Nest Golf Club and Angus Glen Golf Club’s South Course, were included, Canadian golf magazine SCOREGolf revealed in its latest edition.

Located in Maple, Eagles Nest was ranked 11th while Markham's Angus Glen Golf Club’s South Course was 50th.

Created next to a landfill and designed by Doug Carrick, Eagles Nest Golf Club opened for business in 2004 and is an 18-hole, par 72 course measuring 7,476 yards from the tips.

Also originally designed by Carrick, Angus Glen Golf Club’s 18-hole, par 72 South Course opened in 1995 and played host to the 2002 Canadian Open.

During the 2007 Canadian Open, the 17th and 18th holes were utilized while the rest of the course was played on their North Course.

Undergoing a major renovation carried out by Martin Ebert two years ago in preparation to host the inaugural World Junior Girls’ Championship last year and the recent 2015 Pan American Games golf competition, the course measures 7,400 yards.

In determining their placements in the pecking order, a course rating and value factor were utilized.

With the former factor, a course had to be rated by at least seven SCOREGolf course raters to be eligible for ranking.

Ties were broken by giving the course with more ratings the higher ranking.

The value factor was calculated by dividing a course’s peak rate into its rating to yield a dollar value per rating point to the nearest hundredth of a decimal.

Only courses in the top 59 were considered.
