The federal Liberals are promising - if elected - to give teachers and early childhood educators a tax break on extra school supplies purchased out of their own pockets.

It will provide up to a $150 refundable tax benefit on $1,000 worth of material, including posters, specialized art supplies and books.

The cost to taxpayers is expected to be about $60 million per year.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, a former teacher, says the tax system does not recognize many of the extra expenses educators face each year.

He says the policy is designed to complement the party’s larger child benefit and tax cut for the middle class.
