Accessibility and use at two popular Georgina attractions will be improved after two out of four federal grant applications totalling close to $500,000 were approved last week.

“This is wonderful news for our community,” Mayor Margaret Quirk said of the federal financial injection for De La Salle Park and the Pefferlaw Ice Pad under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

The town received a $108,900 grant to offset $326,700 in accessibility improvements for De La Salle Park in Jackson’s Point.

Park washrooms will be upgraded to meet Ontario Disability Act standards and two accessible pathways will be built to connect parking lots with washroom and playground structures, as well as provide direct access to the waterfront.

The Pefferlaw Ice Pad will also get a much-talked-about roof thanks to a $315,000 grant from federal coffers toward the estimated $786,225 price tag for the project.

“Funding support like this allows us to continue to build a better Georgina, for all to enjoy,” Quirk said.

“These are two very worthy projects and many residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the improvements.”

The program provides $150 million over two years toward rehabilitation, renovation and expansion projects of existing public assets such as community and cultural centres, recreational facilities and local arenas, with $44.4 million being allocated for projects in Ontario.
