The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced August 17 the new Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program aimed at helping communities and individuals get financial assistance quickly and easily following natural disasters. Set to launch in early 2016, the new program will replace the current Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program. It will give municipalities four months rather than 14 days to assess costs and request provincial assistance after a disaster so that they have time to focus on emergency response and remove the current requirement for municipal volunteers to fundraise for matching provincial assistance.
