Toronto Green P parking lot fees rising
The hikes are meant to offset inflationary costs and discourage purchase of monthly passes, the parking authority says.

Prices are rising at about 50 of Toronto’s “Green P” parking lots, while on-street metered fees will probably go up soon as well.
Toronto Parking Authority president Lorne Persiko said Wednesday that the TPA board voted in favour of the hikes at a July 30 meeting.
Persiko said a full list of the changes won’t be available until next week. As an example, he said prices at the city hall garage are going from $2.50 to $2.75 per half-hour, and from $270 to $280 for monthly passes.
The hikes, to start coming into effect Sept. 8, will generate between $2 million and $2.5 million per year for the parking authority, he said.
Last year, TPA earned gross revenues of $129 million and gave $44,345,000 of that to the city treasury.
The hike for short-term parking at off-street lots is to offset inflation, Persiko said, while monthly rates are being increased to discourage purchase of those passes.
“Our target users are short-term parkers — we want people to be able to visit the stores and to do it affordably, and we have to make spaces available” if too many are being taken up by long-term users, he said.
Persiko said his agency will be talking to councillors this fall about recommended increases in some metered on-street spots. Unlike with off-street pricing, city council has final approval over any changes in the cost of on-street parking.
