Scorching temperatures have prompted Environment Canada to issue a heat warning for York Region.
A hot air mass is expected to move into southern Ontario today, its website said.
Daytime highs in the low 30s are expected today with warm overnight minimum temperatures near 20 C. The hot weather conditions will likely continue into Thursday.
York Region is advising you to take extra precautions to stay safe in the extreme temperatures.
Seniors, infants and young children, people exercising or working outside and those with certain medical conditions are particularly vulnerable.
The public is asked to check on family, friends and neighbours to ensure they are handling the heat well.
If you experience dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion, seek medical attention immediately, a statement from the region’s Health Connection said.
Tips for beating the heat include staying indoors in cool, well-ventilated areas, wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric, drinking plenty of cool liquids especially water before feeling thirsty, reducing physical activity especially in full sun, avoiding sun exposure by wearing a wide-brimmed hat or using an umbrella and wearing sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher.
Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.
If the warning extends to Wednesday, the region will consider issuing an extreme heat warning.
