A second branch of the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library may be constructed, but not for another 10 years and it may be done in conjunction with the towns of Aurora and Newmarket.

Neither of those municipalities is able to expand their libraries, according to Councillor Ken Ferdinands, whose ward borders on both towns.

He suggested, with Aurora and Newmarket’s new home construction to the south, along with Whitchurch-Stouffville’s northern rural population, it might make sense to create a centralized library for the three municipalities in rural Whitchurch-Stouffville.

“The future demands we co-operate with each other,” he told his fellow councillors Tuesday night.

The comments came as council decided to go ahead with a new design for the expansion of the library/leisure centre in Stouffville Memorial Park.

The project still requires other approvals from council before a shovel goes in the ground.

Once complete, the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library is expected to be approximately 34,600 gross square feet in size.

The space will serve a population beyond the 55,000 anticipated by 2021.

The current library is 15,425 gross square feet.
