Allied Global Holdings and Cori’s Cafe received recognition for business excellence.

The businesses were honoured during the fourth annual York Region Business Excellence awards, held at the Colossal Chamber Networking Event organized by several York Region chambers of commerce and the Bradford and Markham boards of trade June 2. The gathering took place at The Manor Event Venue in King Township.

About 600 people were expected to attend.

York Region chambers represent more than 7,500 member businesses. Each chamber recognizes business excellence at the local level with awards in areas such as entrepreneurship, innovation or environmental leadership. Participating chambers submitted two of their 2014 business excellence award recipients for the regionwide honour. A team of volunteers from the executive MBA program at The Schulich School of Business, York University and the Seneca College Enactus Group reviewed the finalists and determined the recipients.

York Region’s Large Business of the Year, Allied Global, is a member of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. Founded in 1955, Allied Global has evolved from a traditional accounts receivable management firm to a multinational service provider of complete contact centre solutions.

The firm’s competitive edge lies in its ability to offer clients a single-point solution throughout their customer’s lifecycle.

Cori’s Cafe, Small Business of the Year, represented the Georgina Chamber of Commerce.

In 2007, Cori Doern gave a jar of homemade soup as a present to her daughter’s teacher.

Word spread quickly and Doern had sold 250 jars to local soup lovers within weeks. By the end of the year, she was supplying cafes in Newmarket and Toronto.

Doern has since opened the doors of Cori’s Cafe, at 132 High St., Sutton.

Today, thanks to that one jar of soup, you don’t have to go far to find delicious soups, salads, wraps and desserts.
