Aurora says permits are needed before Canada Post installs its community mailboxes.

Canada Post has proposed 127 community mailboxes be installed in the municipality to transition from home mail delivery. Following in the footsteps of the City of Hamilton, council recently approved new regulations to be housed under the town’s existing road excavation bylaws.

In a staff report, town solicitor Warren Mar and planning director Marco Ramunno advised members of council it would be inappropriate to create a bylaw and permit fees specific to Canada Post.

The proposal originally came from Councillor Tom Mrakas after residents and council members expressed concerns regarding the lack of consultation conducted regarding the location of the boxes. Some feel many of these locations create safety and accessibility issues.

Mar pointed out Hamilton’s decision to enact a bylaw requiring Canada Post retain permits and pay fees associated with the mailbox installations is still before the courts and council could wait to see the outcome before making a decision.

Council approved the bylaw with only Mayor Geoff Dawe and Councillor Paul Pirri opposed.
