Toronto expands recycling program to include soft plastics like milk and sandwich bags

The city has announced an expansion of its recycling program to include soft plastics.

Starting June 1st, soft, stretchy plastics such as milk and sandwich bags will be accepted in Toronto’s blue bins.

Here are five new items you can recycle that you probably didn’t know you could:

• Garden soil bags
• Dry cleaning bags
• Soft drink packaging
• Compost bags
• Newspaper or flyer bags
• And five items that you can’t recycle that you probably thought you could:
• Any type of black coloured plastic
• Laminated plastic film and cling wrap
• Snack food bags, including chip bags and candy bar wrappers
• Meat and cheese bag packages
• Cereal liners
