Newmarket has received a rather warm response to its ice storm damage claim.

The municipality will get an interim payment of nearly $43,550 from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, as part of the Ontario Ice Storm Assistance program. The town has applied for $124,425 related to the December 2013 storm and is awaiting final approval for the outstanding balance.

“Although it was not severe enough for an emergency to be declared, there were significant response and recovery costs incurred,” treasurer Mike Mayes said, in a report to councillors.

An estimated $250 million in damage was caused by the storm across the Greater Toronto Area, he said.
