Water should be getting back to normal in central Newmarket soon.
The town, in collaboration with York Region, is ending the temporary free chlorine water disinfection program that has been in place in the central district zone of the municipality the past few months. The town will convert back to the chloramine disinfection system used prior to the free chlorine maintenance program.
Regular monitoring of drinking water quality will continue throughout the re-conversion, but drinking water will remain safe to consume during the process.
As the transition in water chemistry moves through the distribution pipes, residents may notice a slight change in taste and odour, or a periodic discolouration of cold water. To remove discolouration, run a cold tap for about five to 10 minutes, until the water becomes clear.
