This weekend you can literally take steps to help ensure Vaughan residents facing financial challenges get to enjoy recreation programs offered by the city.

The City of Vaughan is holding its seventh annual RECAssist event — a five-kilometre adventure walk/run — Saturday, May 23 at Maple Nature Reserve Trail, 10401 Dufferin St. (north of Major Mackenzie Drive, on the east side).

RECAssist, established in 2009, is a fee-assistance program that subsidizes the cost of recreational programs for low-income individuals and families.

The program provides full funding for basic recreation programs or partial funding for specialized programs such as horseback riding.

Saturday’s event is open to all-ages, but parental supervision is required for children 13 and under. And you’re welcome to bring your dog along, as long as it’s on a leash.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the walk gets underway at 9 a.m.

The fee to take part is $25 for adults and $10 for children.

The goal is to raise $5,000 for RECAssist, which is fully funded through donations, said Mary Reali, Vaughan’s director of recreation and culture.

Last year, 460 people benefitted from the program, Reali noted.
