Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority's tree seedling program a growing success

You can look forward to more forest cover in coming years, thanks to one of the best years in recent history for the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority’s tree seedling program.

The program offers low-cost, locally grown seedlings to local landowners wanting to plant 100 or more trees on their property.

They picked up about 6,000 seedlings in late April.

Landowners can plant the seedlings themselves or take advantage of conservation authority staff who can help with large-scale plantings, if necessary.

“Each year we seem to get more and more uptake on our seedling program,” forest technician Paul Cottenden said in a statement.

“And we’re seeing a lot of repeat customers who say the reason they come back is because of the quality of the seedlings.”

Planting trees is one of the easiest ways to help improve the environment because trees stabilize soil, clean the air, provide habitats to wildlife and protect against flooding, the conservation authority said.
