A community garden could sprout up in Sunnyridge Neighbourhood Park.

That is where Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville staff is recommending one go.

Council is expected to decide on the matter during Tuesday’s meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. It is open to the public.

Based on feedback from two public meetings, town staff has suggested allotment gardens be constructed in Sunnyridge park, just north of the existing tennis courts. The park is south of Hoover Park Drive and east of Tenth Line.

Allotments gardens are a number of plots that are either leased or assigned to individuals who maintain what they planted.

If approved by council, rules and plot fees as well as assignment of duties will be co-ordinated and presented to council at the April 21 meeting, according to the staff report.

This week’s approval would also enable the immediate launch of the program so the land could be ready for planting around the Victoria Day long weekend.

Phase 2 of Sunnyridge’s construction is slated for this year, however, the gardens will be outside the construction zone, according to the report.

That project has an approved budget of $476,700. Town staff would like to utilize about $40,000 of that money for the gardens.
