A man in his 30s is dead after being struck by a GO train at Union Station during the Tuesday evening rush hour.
Toronto police Duty Insp. Paul MacIntyre told CP24 that a video of the incident shows a man whose bag or article of clothing got snagged on the train as it pulled out of the station.
The man was subsequently dragged underneath the train and MacIntyre says GO personnel did not initially realize someone was struck.
MacIntyre says police are investigating all possibilities, including whether the crowded conditions on the platform may have played a role in the accident.
The identity of the victim, a GO Transit customer, was being withheld until the family was notified.
The incident happened at around 5:30 p.m. on platform 11-12 and involved a train en route to Barrie. Police tape cordoned off platforms 10-13 Tuesday evening, and several police vehicles were on site.
“Our hearts go out to the family of the individual involved,” said GO Transit spokesman Mark Ostler. He added that GO Transit is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.
The fatality came on the second day of Operation Lifesaver’s Rail Safety Week in Canada.
