A few of Newmarket’s upcoming beautification projects could get a little funding from York Region.

The town will apply for cash for two projects - the Davis Drive streetscape improvements and a gateway sign at the Davis and Bathurst Street intersection - through the region’s 2015 municipal streetscape partnership program. If approved by the region, the town could receive compensation for up to 33 per cent of the project cost. That could total $199,250 and $43,708, respectively.

The purpose of the program is to provide funding to local municipalities and stakeholders to support streetscape design, development and infrastructure services commissioner Peter Noehammer said in a report to council. The program assists in cost sharing on locally initiated projects to improve the public realm in the region.

The Davis streetscape will be constructed as part of the VivaNext reconstruction.

Town staff members are in the process of awarding a tender for the gateway sign. That project is scheduled for completion this year.

Both beautification projects will move ahead as planned, regardless of whether or not the region contributes funding, Noehammer said.
