6 ways to enjoy your March Break in northern York Region

1. Rock on!

Register your band in the battle of the rock bands tournament at the Newmarket TheatreĀ  March 18 and 19.
Based on the game RockBand, registration is $2 per person in this family event and your band will compete head to head against other bands.

Registration forms can be picked up and dropped off at the Newmarket Theatre, Magna Centre, Ray Twinney Complex, the Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place, Youth Centre or the recreation department in the municipal offices on Mulock Drive.

2. Get a little sticky

The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority hosts its family maple syrup program at Scanlon Creek Conservation Area in Bradford March 21 and 22, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Learn to use the techniques of early settlers to identify and tap maple trees, collect sap and help boil it down into syrup. Your reward will be pure syrup drizzled over a toasted waffle.

Registration is required and the fee is $9 for adults and $6 for children.

3. Be crafty

Test your creativity at the Aurora Cultural Centre on March 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. to help celebrate its fifth anniversary.

Create personalized button-pins with collage and images, one to take with you and leave one or two to share with the community. You can also learn to fold your own origami box out of one sheet of paper to store your button-pin memento.

Admission is free for all ages.

4. Go camping

Register your children for one of the many March Break camp adventures hosted by your local municipality.

From making crafts to getting active or learning new skills, every town in northern York Region offers a variety of program choices at their local recreation facilities to keep your children busy during the week.

5. Get techy

Learn how to program and create your very own video game with Scratch at the Georgina Public Library’s Peter Gzowski branch in Sutton.

From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on March 19, participants of the beginner’s workshop will learn the basics to make a platform video game online.

Makey Makey at the Keswick branch on March 19 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. will show participants how to transform everyday objects into computer keys using electrical circuits. Make a banana piano, play games using Play-Doh and even use people to create song.

6. Be amazing

Get a partner who is up for an adventure and register for the Amazing Stouffville Race.

Starting at the Leisure Centre, teams of two will complete challenges around the downtown Stouffville area and race back to the start.

The event features prizes including a pool party, Leisure Centre and Laser Quest gift cards and more.
Entrants must be 13 to 18 years of age.

Registration is $14 per team. Register by March 12 at townofws.ca.
