Steeles Avenue will soon mean nothing to the United Ways of Toronto and York Region, whose members “overwhelmingly” approved a merger in separate votes Wednesday, March 4.
“Combining our efforts is the single most effective way for us to expand local investments, tackle complex social issues” and provide better opportunities for volunteers on both sides of the road, Heather Mason-Wood, United Way York Region’s board chairperson said in a joint news release.
Toronto United Way CEO Susan McIsaac will head the combined new charity umbrella for the city and region, while current York Region CEO Daniele Zanotti “will have a senior role.”
The merged organization will officially come into being this July 1, the release said.
