It was earlier in March when we learned it would cost an extra $150-million to get construction back on track for the Spadina subway extension into Vaughan.

Now we're hearing the City of Toronto and York Region are on the hook for another $85-million for the project because the Ontario government has come up short and won't do anything about it.

The city manager explains that when the provincial government committed it's share to the project, it put the money into a trust and the assumption was it would grow to just shy of $1.1-billion.

In fact, the 4 percent growth rate didn't happen, creating the $85-million dollar shortfall which is to be shared by Toronto and York Region. The city's share of that is $51-million.

In Joe Pennachetti's report he says, "This report recommends that the province be requested to contribute additional funds to remedy this shortfall. However, should additional provincial funding not be forthcoming, it would result in additional municipal funding pressures."
