The number of City of Vaughan employees raking in more than $100,000, dipped slightly in 2014.
In total, 236 employees found their way onto the so-called Sunshine List, released earlier today. That’s down from 258 in 2013.
The drop was driven by a reduction in the number firefighters earning six-figure salaries, which fell to 104 from 142.
“We had an arbitrated salary in 2013, it was three years worth of back pay, and that bumped a lot our firefighters over the ($100,000) threshold,” said Fire Chief Larry Bentley, whose salary rang in at $173,616. “There was no arbitration award (in 2014) so that’s why we have less number of firefighters on the Sunshine List.”
Take firefighters out of the equation and the number of city employees on the list actually rose by 16.
Interestingly, a handful of Vaughan’s top earners for 2014 no longer work for the city.
Former city manager Clayton Harris, who abruptly “retired” in April 2013 was paid the most at $261,485, while former commissioner of community services Marlon Kallideen, who suddenly departed in January 2014, was paid just more than $211,000.
Vaughan’s former solicitor MaryLee Farrugia and Joe Pittari, former commissioner of strategic and corporate services, both of whom resigned rather suddenly last month, were paid $207,098 and $205, 955 respectively.
Interim City Manager Barbara Cribbett, who is retiring in the coming months, pulled in just more than $249,000.
