Would you like a plot of land somewhere in town, other than your back yard, to grow vegetables, maybe flowers?

Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville staff wants to gauge resident interest for the creation of community gardens.

A public consultation meeting takes place March 11, 7 p.m. in council chambers, 111 Sandiford Dr.

“It’s a great community social gathering (place),” said Micole Ongman, the municipality’s recreation manager, who noted the town has received inquiries from residents about constructing community gardens.

There is no location or model chosen - that is the type of information Ongman said town staff wants to get at the meeting.

Potential locations, according to Ongman, includes behind 6240 Main St. on the south side of the reservoir, Musselman’s Lake’s Coultice Park, the Operations Centre or Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area.

When it comes to the model, options include each participating resident maintaining his/her own plot or a committee organizes what gets planted and how it is maintained.

Town staff is also looking at other municipalities - Markham, Milton and Vaughan - to see what they are doing, according to Ongman.

The plan is to have the garden planted this summer.
