The City of Vaughan is developing what it calls a "made-in-Vaughan" approach to secondary suites, or basement apartments and if you're interested in learning more, you are invited to attend a meeting Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in the council chamber at city hall, 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.
Since provincial policy came into effect in 2012, the city has been working to address the provincial requirements to allow secondary suites. It is also currently completing a citywide secondary suites study.
A secondary suite is a self-contained unit within a house or within an accessory building on the same lot as a house. For example, it can take the form of a basement apartment, a unit on any other floor, or a unit above a free-standing garage. A secondary suite has its own kitchen and bathroom facilities.
The meeting will review changes to the city's Official Plan and to the zoning by-law, which are needed in order to allow residents to have secondary suites on their property.
