York Regional Police is advising the public of a heavy police presence, due to the removal from a home of explosive materials, in the area of Willis Road and Riverside Drive in Vaughan.

York police received a call earlier today from a concerned citizen who had discovered aged explosives when they were cleaning a residence on Willis Road. The explosives apparently have been there for decades, left by a resident who had worked in the mining industry. The incident is not considered suspicious.

Officers with the York Regional Police Explosives Detection Unit have been called to the residence to ensure the safe disposal of the explosives. Several nearby residences have been evacuated as a precaution while the operation is underway.

Anyone in the area is asked to obey directions of officers at perimeter points and your patience is appreciated.

If you come across firearms or explosives while cleaning or renovating a residence, call police immediately. While these items may have been there undisturbed for some time, moving them can make them more volatile and create a hazardous situation. York officers are highly trained in the removal of these items and will attend to take care of their safe disposal.
