The City of Mississauga can finally close the books on the 2013 ice storm, receiving the final reimbursement payment from the Province.

Over two years later, the final $4,996,118 has trickled in from the Province’s Ice Storm Assistance Program. This brings Mississauga’s total compensation to $8,307,061 and represents 88 per cent of the total claim.

The first installment of $3,310,943 was received in April 2015.

“The City of Mississauga is sincerely appreciative for the reimbursement of costs received through the Ice Storm Assistance Program which would otherwise be burdened by City reserves,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie in a press release.

The ice storm left thousands of homes in Mississauga without power and traffic around the city was a nightmare, with traffic lights not functioning at major intersections.

Meadowvale, Malton and Erin Mills suffered significant tree damage, with thousands of branches breaking off and falling to the ground, unable to bear the weight of the thick coating of ice.

Provincial funding will be allocated to the City’s reserve funds.
