GO Transit riders may finally get a signalized crosswalk to help them cross Main Street in downtown Stouffville.

After years of lobbying by residents for Whitchurch-Stouffville council to install some sort of traffic calming measure so GO bus and train riders could cross the street without feeling like they are playing a game of Frogger, town staff now say a signalized pedestrian crossing is “warranted” between the train tracks and Lloyd Street.

The recommendation goes before council Tuesday at 7 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. Council chambers are located at 111 Sandiford Dr.

The staff report noted the design is complicated and the approval process may be difficult because of how close Lloyd Street is to the tracks.

The cost will be approximately $350,000.

Construction could take place in 2016 in conjunction with a proposed Main Street reconstruction project.

The 2008 consultant’s recommendation was to install an intersection pedestrian signal, which are traffic control signals activated by the push of a button.

The installation of the signals may result in Blake Street, which runs parallel to the tracks south of Main, becoming a way-one street - southbound - and the removal of curbside parking stalls to ensure adequate site lines and separation distances, according to the report.
