Vaughan firefighters are braving extreme cold as they battle a fire that destroyed a maintenance building at the Eagles Nest Golf Course near McNaughton Road and Dufferin Street.
The two-alarm fire began at about 4:15 a.m. and spread quickly.
Because fertilizer and other chemicals are stored in the building, fire crews are taking precautions to ensure they aren’t exposed to dangerous substances, according to published reports.
The Ministry of the Environment will conduct air tests to make sure there isn’t any risk to the public.
The Vaughan Professional Fire Fighters Association has been tweeting photos and reports from the scene.
Due to temperatures hovering around -30C with the wind chill, firefighters have had to contend with a frozen fire hydrant, according to one tweet.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
There are no reported injuries.
Damage is estimated at more than $500,000, considering the building, tractors and lawnmowers involved, Vaughan Fire Chief Larry Bentley said.
Firefighters are expected to be at the scene much of the day putting out hot spots.
