The flame celebrating the Pan Am Games is coming to Toronto — but it will take 41 days and thousands of torchbearers to do it.
The cross-country torch relay route, released Tuesday morning, highlights where and when the torch will stop in more than 130 Canadian communities, by travelling on-land and through the air as it winds its way to the host city.
The relay will begin in Toronto on May 30, usually stopping in several cities per day. The flame will stop in Halifax, N.S. on June 7, Richmond, B.C. on June 14, and Calgary, Alta. on July 3.
The full route map is available on the Pan Am Games website.
The torch will tour five national historic sites across Canada, including Fort Henry in Kingston, the Halifax Citadel, and The Forks in Winnipeg.
Other notable sites that will host the torch and its lucky ceremonial bearers include Algonquin Provincial Park, Point Pelee National Park, five First Nations communities in Ontario, and six Canadian Forces bases across the country.
After the torch is lit in a traditional ceremony in Teotihuacan, Mexico, it will start the Canadian leg of its journey on May 30.
More than 3,000 torchbearers will venture more than 20,000 kilometres with the Pan Am torch in hand to ensure its safe arrival in Toronto by July 10.
