A turf maintenance building at a golf course in Vaughan has been destroyed by fire and crews are working to prevent the blaze from spreading to a nearby administrative building.
The fire began in the building at the rear of the Eagles Nest Golf Course near McNaughton Road and Dufferin Street at around 4:15 a.m. and quickly spread.
According to Vaughan Fire, the building was entirely engulfed by the time firefighters arrived, making a defensive approach necessary.
Fertilizer and other chemicals were stored inside the building and Chief Larry Bentley told CP24 that steps are being taken to prevent firefighters from being exposed to any hazardous chemicals.
Bentley said crews will also test the air in the area to ensure there in so danger to the public.
“Most of the smoke is blowing over the golf course, so it is dissipating but we do have some concern about that,” Bentley said.
Nobody was in the building at the time that the fire broke out and no injuries have been reported.
Bentley said firefighters expect to be on the scene putting out hot spots for "the majority of the day."
