Those hoping to carry the Liberal banner in the new riding of King-Vaughan during this year’s federal election will square off early next month.

But that won't include former Liberal MPP Mario Racco

A nomination meeting has been scheduled for Sunday, March 8 at King City Public School from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Reportedly, five of the six people who put their names forward as potential Grit candidates have been given the green light by the party’s head office in Ottawa to seek the nomination.

They are: John Dowd, Major Abdul Khalifa, Gary Gladstone, former Vaughan regional councillor Deb Schulte and Carmine Tucci,

Racco, who had filed his papers to the party seeking to become a nomination candidate late last month, won't be on the ballot.

The nomination was called before he received the green light.

Racco could not be reached.

Whoever wins the nomination for the Liberals will square off against Conservative candidate Konstantin Toubis in the general election currently slated to take place in October.
