Five fun things going on in York Region this weekend

The weather may be cold, but there are a number events and activities going on this weekend all over the region that can help you get out of the house and have some fun.

1. BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATIONS
Come out to celebrate, learn and be inspired by Black Canadian cultural heritage in Vaughn this Saturday.

The free Black History Month event will feature a film presentation of “A Commemorative Tour of Owen Sound’s Black History Heritage” as well as an address by Ngozi Paul, award winning Canadian actress and co-creator and co-executive producer of Da Kink in My Hair.

The celebrations are presented by the Thornhill African Caribbean Canadian Association and take place on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Vaughan City Hall, 1241 Major Mackenzie Drive, Multi-Purpose Room.

2. MARKHAM SPRING HOME SHOW
Forget about grey February and get a taste of spring at the Markham Spring Homeshow this weekend.

Over 100 exhibitors will be on site, along with guest speakers and how-to demonstrations.

Special guests will be featured on the main stage, including Mark Cullen who will be stopping by on Friday at 4 p.m., celebrity interior designer Jane Lockhart who will be making two appearances Saturday afternoon and Frank “Flowers” Ferragine who will be there Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The Lions Club will also be on site to collect e-waste.

The Feb. 20 to 22 show takes place at the Markham Fairgrounds and will run Friday from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

3. HOT COUNTRY AND BLUEGRASS
Is there a better way to warm up the soul than some hot bluegrass and country music?

Stouffville United Music presents Hot Country & Bluegrass to heat up your night.

The event will feature fiddle champion Laura Heighway with Country Friends, and Walter Brent & the Bluegrass Buddies.

The event takes place Sunday, Feb. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Stouffville United Church, 34 Church St. near Main St.  Free will offering admission. For information, call 905-642-2545

 4. YORK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS TRAGIC LOVE
The York Symphony Orchestra will be preforming classical tragic love pieces in two separate shows this weekend.

On Saturday night they will be playing at Trinity Anglican Church in Aurora. 79 Victoria St.  The show begins at 8 p.m. and tickets are $28 adults, $23 seniors, $15 students.

The second show takes place Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Preforming Arts, 10268 Yonge St. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 seniors and $15 students.

The program will feature music by Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky.

5. ALL-NEW NEWMARKET SPORTS CARD AND COMICS SHOW
York region’s monthly sports and comics show will take place on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Newmarket Community Centre.

1967 Stanley Cup Champion Brian Conacher will be making a rare appearance to sign autographs and take photos with fans at noon and 2 p.m.

There will be sports cards, memorabilia, vendors, prizes and free stuff for kids.

All the fun takes place at the Newmarket Community Centre, 200 Doug Duncan Dr. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
